Hey my fellow educators...
I was just wondering what is an independent study class? In one of my classes I teach and there is only 3 students!! My boss said that this is an independent study class???
I am sure we will get done early because there is only 3 students, I am used to 15-20!!
Any advice??
Thanks

An independent study course is one that there is no set course time, or class. The student is to do the work on their own, submit it, and discuss with the instructor anything they do not understand. This is totally student driven. Also, the pay for an independent course is always less than what an instructor would get for a regular course. This is why colleges like them, they can pay less. Some colleges pay the instructor nothing for doing an independent course. Students usually take these courses, when they need a particular class for a sequence and the course is not being given. Sometimes students will do this type of course when they are repeating a course or making up a failing grade. If you are going to do an independent course, make sure you and the administration are in agreement about what is expected of you, the students, and the pay. Good luck!
