In limbo here, need advise

Nurses Career Support

Published

I missed a week in a job while still on probation. My father is ill and I am his primary caretaker. My supervisor was on vacation and I called in every day. The last day I called in my supervisor was on vacation. His supervisor, HIS MOTHER then called me to find out why I did not call. I told her I had left a message for him, (which I had done everyday that I was out). She told me that he was on vacation. She then told me to let her know when I would be back to work and gave me her cell. I called her the next morning told her my dad was out of the hospital and she told me I would not be coming back to the clinic I was in because the dr. was upset by the time of my absence. She told me she would be placing me in another clinic. I have heard nothing since, she will not return my calls. I don't know what to do. I am so stressed. I also have a disabled husband who is pressuring me about the money I am not making. I have had to quit 2 jobs because of my dad, but he was doing well for awhile and I need to work. Anyone have any advise?

Sorry about your job. I understand what it's like to take care of a disabled family member. I don't know if you've tried already, but did you look into possibly getting a home care nurse or at least a home health aide for your father? Is he over 65? If so, then I think medicare can pay for some of it at least. If he's younger and disabled, he may qualify for medicaid, or some kind of financial assistance in your region.

I don't think you can keep a steady job like that, since even if it's a valid excuse, many places wouldn't want to keep someone on staff who frequently has to be out, especially in health care.

You have to find a way to have someone else care for him, if possible. Speak to a social worker.
