Hi all! I am a student and I am trying to do some research for an essay that I am writing. the topic is professional-patient communication during labor. I could come up with my own ideas of how a patient should be talked to during labor but just would like some input from people that deal with this everyday.

thanks

During the second stage it is very easy to get caught up in enthusiasm and the doctor's possible impatience and start yelling push, push, push, which doesn't let the patient follow the lead of her own body and can be overwhelming - she is not in much shape to be assertive then.

So ask about her hopes and plans early when she is able to talk about them and remember that a normal delivery is not a race.

When pushing my preferred method is with low lighting and quiet enviroment with slow and calm counting, no yelling push. But there are some patients who actually like a cheeleading squad to yell PUSH and count for them. It is totally up to my patient and I can usually gadge what she likes, I also ask what here preference is. I thinks it is so cool when there are several women helping deliver by helping with legs or help hold chin to chest, it is just very women bonding, gurrl powerish. lol I don't know if this helps answer your quesitons but I hiope it gives some prespective.:redbeathe
