...get a grasp on nursing theories and how they might be applicable to neonatal nursing.
I'm going back to school (astonishing!) and the school ascribes to the Orem Self Care Theory.
Any insights would be most appreciated!!

What is your purpose here - to write a paper or to develop a philosophy of practice or what? The theory you mentioned cannot be directly applied to neonates - except that their parents will be doing the "self-care". In that case, the theory calls for interaction between the nurse and the parents, nursing assessment of what the parents need to know and do, evaluation of any skills required, and feedback from parents on what to expect and when to call the doctor. That is my take on it. Also, this theory calls for the interaction to be continued - so that you re-evaluate as situations/time goes on.

The theory can be applied to neonates directly (as well as with the families) in that part of Orem's theory allows for the fact that some patients are unable to care for themselves. Focus on that part of Orem's theory and explore that aspect of it in order to discuss the direct care of the baby. Use the other parts of the theory as you focus on your work with the families.
If you really want to explore deeper ... think about ways in which the neonate is NOT totally helpless. Think in terms of their capabilities and what neonates are able to do. Neonates are able to do many things. While they usually need assistance to fulfill their needs, they are a partner in many interactions. They can express themselves in many ways. Expert neonatal nurses learn how to interpret their behavior and modify their care accordingly.
BTW -- I am an old NICU nurse who now teaches theory. I haven't found a theory yet I can't apply to the NICU.
I don't start school til ?fall (best case scenario), so not trying to get homework help. Just trying to start to think of how to work w/these theories in the context of neonates (my area of practice).
I have some books on order so I can start reading ahead. I don't want to look like a complete idiot when school starts. (I wonder if there's a complete idiot's guide to nursing theories? If not, there should be!! )
Llg--How much will you charge me for tutoring? I might need a lot of help!!
ps--I understand that Orem recently passed away.

Don't worry about your program too much yet!! I am half-way through with my MSN and the nursing theory class was very reasonable. The instructor taught at a reasonable pace and no one expects you to know it all at this point. You will belearning the finer points of the theories and then be able to apply them to your particular nursing specialty. I am sure that once the time comes, you will do just fine. Relax!!
