im selfish? hmmm

While having a conversation w/ a young lady Nurse, i happened to mention

1. Don't really like kids

2. Kind of don't want to have kids

3. HATED OB/PEDS rotation and have no interest in these areas.

Her reply ' Oh my gosh you are soo SELFISH... that is so unwomanly (sp) '

So... Just because im a woman, i have to LOVE kids and automatically want to be a L&D, PP, PEDS nurse?

Sigh... Mini rant over... feel better....

Wow I can't believe someone is rude enough to say that! I love my kids, I just don't like other peoples kids so Peds/OB is definitely out for me.

Not selfish. It would be very irresponsible to have kids when you don't really want them.

You can count me in as another female who does not necessarily like children. I'm 30 years of age with no children, and I have absolutely no interest in specialties such as OB, pediatrics, postpartum, NICU, PICU, or any areas where I would regularly come into contact with infants and children.

Sorry, but I simply do not understand children or relate well to them. No amount of training in stages of child development has been able to change that.

haha, I will join you then.. I don't like kids, except my own most of the time..I hated OB/peds too and I don't want any part of OB or peds...

I guess I'm selfish too then! I do have children (grown now!) but I have never wnated to nor have I ever worked in OB or pEDS. Not my cup of tea - at all! We all have things we like or dislike - that doesn't make you selfish. She needs a dictionary!

Everyone has some place they wouldn't want to work.

Its so cool that we have so many choices.

maybe she was being sarcastic. some people really, really can't pick up on sarcasm. that's what it sounds like to me. it would be so hilarious if she felt the same way you do.

What a silly woman.

I'm sure she skipped off to the rest of her day feeling high and mighty.

Good for her.

If that's what she needed to do to boost her sense of self-worth... bah!

Poor you, for having to deal with such an idiot.

We CHOSE not to have children, and I've been married for 16 years.

I think It's more selfish to have them, just because "society thinks you should."

Good for you... People have finally stopped asking me about it. I have come up with some pretty raunchy answers when people ask me stupid crap such as: "WHY don't you have kids.." Seriously... I guess morons truly exist. :D

All the best to you!!!:)

That's super frustrating. I have no desire to work with kids/babies either. I haven't decided if I want any of my own yet…. but I have a few years to mull that over… haha

will you please share some of your "raunchy" answers? lol

i had a good friend when i was in my 20's.

she was a divorcee with 2 young kids.

i was single at the time.

she used to continually insist that, "single people w/o kids are some of the most self-centered people in the world.

they only think of themselves, whereas moms can't afford to focus on themselves, since we have children."

i do believe that many feel that way.

i consider people like my friend, martyrs. (oh woe is me, types.)

as suggested, i totally believe that if you don't want kids, don't have them.

there's nothing worse than a kid feeling they weren't wanted.
