Today was the first time I gave an IM injection and was met with resistance. I'm wondering why this happens and what you would do when it happens? I gave the injection on the deltoid and I think it may be because my pt was a bit tense. Like he had his shoulders/arms in a shrug position. So after trying and still getting resistance, I took the needle/med out. I ended up changing needles to a new one and rewiping his deltoid muscle with alcohol, just at a different location. This time, the medication went through without much resistance. My patient said he felt it but there wasn't much pain. I'm wondering if what I did was ok?? Please let me know what you would do if this happened to you! I'm a little freaked out & scared I might've done something wrong. Thanks!
