If you worked FT during nursing school...

How did you do it?

I'm starting an evening/weekend ADN program Monday, and I work standard office hours. I went over my syllabi last night to make a calendar for each class, and I was overwhelmed with anxiety -- I can't fathom how I can possibly manage all the reading, studying, assignments, lab practice, etc. along with all the things I have to schedule separately, outside of class and clinical time (ATI exams, ChartSmart, return demonstrations, etc.). I know it would be ideal to quit my job and somehow "make it work," but right now that's not an option, so I am doing my best to prepare for what lies ahead.

I would sincerely appreciate any tips or advice from those RNs who have successfully worked through school and lived to tell about it. Thanks!

I worked full time (office hours) while going to school evenings and weekends for my ASN program as well. I had class 2-4 times a week from 5:30 to 9:30, and clinical every other weekend. I was able to get used to working on my weekends and tried to get all my clinical paperwork done on the weekend so I wouldn't have to worry about it early in the week. Ours was usually due the Wednesday following clinical.

I tried to use every minute of my day efficiently. I would download NCLEX apps for my iPod touch and study on my train ride home. I would also make flash cards and study them when I had time at work. Honestly - the reason I was able to work while going to nursing school was because my boss was super supportive and allowed me to study at work and leave early to get things done for school, as long as my work wasn't affected.
