If you are a CRNA, how did you decide to become one?

How did you decide whether you have the ablity and whether you can deal with all the stress and not make mistakes?

I;m not a CRNA but I'm an ICU RN finishing my BSN with the intent to continue on to CRNA. I spent a lot of time taliking to CRNAs and observing them at work. Talked about the moment by moment decisions they make in caring for patients and assessed whether or not I could think like that (given the theoretical/knowledge background) Then I left the OR and decided to give ICU nursing a try. I assess myself constantly. Do I know why I'm doing this? Can I think of any suggestions to make my patient's care better... using all my knowledge of physiology and pharmacology. Am I "getting" it? Do I want to know more about it? Yup. I think I'll be ready to take that leap and survive it when I finish the BSN.

Mistakes? Oh, I'm sure there will be plenty. There have been already. It's a matter of avoiding the careless ones and the huge preventable ones. If I thought I was sloppy or unusually mistake prone, I'd be looking for something easier, not harder, for sure.

Stress? I know there will be plenty. Again, I assess my response to stress, think about ways to handle it when it's multiplied by CRNA school, and work on getting everything in life as under control as possible so it doesn't get out of hand later... saving up money, paying off currrent debts, making good with every potential baby-sitter and light housekeeper I know... Making good with my family!
