I'm currently working in uk as an emergency nurse and will soon have an interview with fraser health surrey memorial hospital. Can anyone give me an idea how the emergency room is? is it nice to work there?

Specializes in Geriatrics.

We deal with SMH ER all the time. It is an EXTREMETLY busy ER, apparently one of the busiest in B.C. THe population of Surrey is growing and the hospital has a hard time dealing with the crowding. It definatley needs to become bigger to cope with the population in Surrey. Surrey Memorial gets alot of bad press and the paper (Vancouver Province) is very critical of the hospital and are quick to point out any issues that occur at SMH. We get alot of residents returned back to our facility with snarky notes as to why they were sent, only for us to have us send them back with serious concerns, some MD's and triage nurses have screamed at us and families have complained about the way they and their loved ones were treated. Residents come back too soon after procedures and alot come back MRSA positive. I have been through the ER twice and felt nurses and MD's were really good to me. I did have a procedure and was looking on the screen (it was an ultrasound) and I said "who is this person" and the lady said that it was my name and I was like no, that's not my name...they had the wrong person's name and PHN. This is just my experiences with SMH and not intended to bash anyone....

My SIL who lives in Surrey, always crossed the bridge into New West when her kids needed to go to Emerg.

My brother never has a problem there but then he is in the police and always gets in right away.

Hi, taeho53. Do you get the interview throught healthmatchbc.org? I pass the initial assessment from CRNBC and need a sponsorship for my temporary RN liencse. healthmatchbc.org put me on a critical care evaluation (I prefer work in ICU) and told me I have to wait for several months because the evaluation will take months. Does this happen to any of you?

I am a MSN and have worked in CCU/CSICU for 5 years. Also, I am very familiar with all drips, mechanical ventilation, pacemaker, IABP, CRRT...... My education and experience don't seem very attractive to them. :(

We get a lot of Surrey residents at our hospital because they refuse to go there - they say it's less crowded and they receive better care. I've never been to Emerg at SMH, but I have done my clinical on a couple of the wards there and have never noticed anything wrong. Infact, my favourite clinical experience was on the Respiratory ward there.

Surrey Memorial is one of the busiest ERs in Canada and the community is growing so fast that the hospital is under alot of strain. I have been there a number of times and while my experience has always been very good, I know there have been some circumstances where people have felt staff were rude or uncaring. People do go to other hospitals because of the wait times.

There is commitment from the provincial government for funding to build a new state-of-the-art ER - to be opened in 2010 - that will triple the size of the currently facility.

Good luck with your interview!
