Hey everyone,
Ok so here goes, I have a couple of questions. I have worked in the NICU (neonatal ICU) for 2.5 years, I just left this past March and took a job in the Cardiac surgical ICU at a large university hospital. I started working with adults because I thought it would make me more competitive for the OR. I just found out that a private hospital is having a peri-op 101 training next January! So, I want to apply to this program but I have some questions. 1.) Will it look bad on my resume if I only worked at a job for 8 mos--my current adult ICU job? 2.) What kind of questions should I get prepared for? 3.) What do you like about the OR? 4.) What do you dislike about the OR 5.) Are men allowed to have facial hair in the OR? (currently I have a trimmed goatee, but I would gladly get rid of it to work in the OR. I appreciate any helpful info. you may have.

If you are really interested in OR nursing, by all means please apply to that program, that is a great opportunity.
I wouldn't worry about the resume, you already have 2.5 years plus the 8 mos., it's great. If you were applying to our OR, they would definitely hire you.
Facial hair is accepted in the OR. Trimmed goatees can be covered with a mask. The full grown beard needs a special hat. It's not a problem at all.
There's a lot of posts here why OR nurses love what they do. Just go through old posts.
A few questions in the interview--- how do you handle difficult people, personalities. They'll give you different scenarios and ask how you would react and what would you do. What are the traits that you think would make you a good OR nurse.
Good luck!
PS. I came across this OR nurse blog somehow, http://unsinkablemollybrown.blogspot.com/ , she has this entry "I choose OR nursing" and I think she pretty much sums up how most of us feel about the OR. The problems in the OR that she talks about is also a common problem in a lot of ORs so just be aware of what you are getting into.
