I want to move Texas as a new grad NP. Need advice

Hey guys,

I am about to graduate from my AGPCNP program in less than 30 days. Currently I live in a TN, which is very competitive when it comes to getting a job as a new grad NP, and I am also at a point in my life where I'm just ready for a change in scenery.

I was thinking about moving to Houston Texas ( Single, No family, No friends) but I am not having a lot of luck locating how the Texas job market is currently for NP's and new grad NPs and what is the pay like.I know that Texas has several hospitals in the area, but as I have learned from my own city, sometimes just having the facilities doesn't = job opprotunites.

I also have some anxiety because I am not sure if its a great idea to move to a new state when starting a new path in my nursing career. I suppose people do it all of the time, but suppose I am more nervous because I am used to the lifestyles of my state and now I kind of have to learn a new culture?

Any advice will be super helpful! Thanks!

Hi There!

I totally sympathize with your anxiety about making a new move! It can be scary and the uncertainties can keep you up at night. I moved to Houston a couple of months ago and I work for one of the major health care systems in Houston. If you are thinking of moving to Houston there are tonnes of jobs for speciality areas for experienced nurses specifically. I came from Canada so it is a big adjustment for me to be working and living here. But I would say overall my experiences have been positive.

Houston would not be my first choice for Texas. Its hot there, but hot everywhere in Texas and the traffic in Houston is horrible - especially downtown. I have been there a few times and it is just horrible driving around there and more expensive than other parts of the state.

San Antonio is no bad, but the traffic there is getting very bad and accidents are so common.

Dallas/Ft Worth is probably the best area if you like a bigger city with every option for a dingle person. Plus jobs are plentiful. It really has the best of everything and the temps car better than southern Texas.

Another option is one of the cities outside of Dallas you can enjoy lower cost of living and still be reasonably close to a major city. Waco, McKinney or Denton give you reasonable access. Depends on what you like.

Texas like anywhere has its good and bad, but jobs seem plentiful. I lived and went to school in texas and enjoyed my time there but was so happy to leave.

Good luck!

Curious: what did you end up doing?

Well, interesting twist of things.i ended up taking a job in Northern Va. It is a cardiology position and i wanted the specialty job more than i wanted to move to Texas...so here i am!
