I Transferred to Do Nursing...Now What?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I wasn't exactly sure where to post this, but I need help and couldn't find a topic on here that helped me with this (although this site did make me want to take CNA classes). Let me give a back story before I go on.

So, I originally wanted to become a pharmacist and attended Long Island University in Brooklyn for their 2+4 Pharm.D program in Fall 2009. I started hating pharmacy and the toll it took on my GPA (dropped to 2.5, left with a 3.3) and wanted to switch to nursing. I know that LIU has a nursing program, but being $50k in debt from LIU, hearing horrible things about the nursing program, and overall just not liking the university turned me off. I transferred to the wonderfully cheap Hunter College for Spring 2011 to finish up pre-reqs.

Now that I'm at Hunter, I want to apply here, Lehman, and...well, that's just my problem. I don't know too many places to apply to because every time I research BSN programs, they seem to be geared towards RNs or those with previous degrees. I couldn't have just finished my degree at LIU because I was pre-pharmacy and the only way to finish was to get into pharmacy school, which was a legit graduate program. I will probably apply to LIU for nursing, but as a complete last resort.

So, I don't know if I should just apply to colleges as I am, but if I do, what BSN nursing school in NYC would take a transfer student without a degree? My research has just come up so vague. Plus, I get really nervous because I don't have an amazingly competitive GPA (although I think I'm getting all A's for this semester) and had retaken some classes I got C's in.

I thought about getting an Associate's or being an LPN (although I don't know too much about LPNs) then finishing the BSN route, but I've already been in school for two years and wonder if that would be a waste of my time. I have tried asking advisers, but they give me a "well, it's your choice" kind of response. I know it's my choice but...I want to become a nurse in a reasonable amount of time, now that I feel like I wasted almost two years on a program I didn't like. That's why I want to become a CNA for now, to get what little taste I can of the field.

So, what is the fastest way to get some kind of nursing degree with my previous experience? Thank you.

Specializes in CNA.

Just get good grades, get a great grade on your entrance exam and you should be alright.
