I just wanted to share with some fellow nurses the story of my friend Laura, who died of CF in 2003.

In the last years of her life she sort of became a mini-celebrity. She had an audio diary on NPR, wrote a memoir and was featured in Glamour magazine.

I was thinking of her today and re-listened to the audio diary. It helps me put my life in perspective after a bad day and reminds me why I became a nurse in the first place.

Thanks for the post. When I was an RT, I used to work with CF patients all the time; they were our "regular customers" so to speak. They were also our "hardest" patients because of their intensive therapy; 12 position CPT, multiple nebulizer txs, other airway clearance techniques. As with many patients with chronic terminal disease, many had wisdom beyond their years and Laura certainly does.

Yeah, she really did.

One of the most amazing parts of the audio diary to me is when she's talking about a conversation she had with her dad at age 11 where he's explaining how serious cystic fibrosis is, and he starts to cry, and she comforts him.

Always makes me cry...
