I am suffering my English part in nursing entrance exam.

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Hi Everyone,

I am looking for getting into a college of nursing in University in Houston Health Science Center area. However, in my recent 3 nursing entrance tests, I always failed to meet the English requirement. I have some difficult in increasing my English reading speed and comprehension. The only way I can think of improving my English is to learn at least 20 vocabularies per day and purchase HESI A2 study guide to help preparing for test. I hope any of you can share your experience in HESI A2 or NET English test taking.

The best way to increase your reading speed and comprehension is to read anything and everything that is both above your reading level and also so interesting that you read them anyway. Exactly what you would read depends on your interests. It does not have to be books. Then alternate that reading with reading things that are easy to read (reading picture books to children is one way to do that).

Another suggestion, especially if the test is coming up soon: alternate practice like above with study of the mechanics of the language. For English, I recommend "Easy Grammer" and "Eats, Shoots, and Leaves". The first teaches grammer and the second teaches punctuation. Eats, Shoots, and Leaves is also very entertaining.

Learning vocabulary won't hurt, but I think it would be better to learn the common roots, suffixes, and prefixes rather than whole words. Then you can figure out a lot more words than you actually know. You can get lists online.

Another idea is to netsearch the "most common words in the English language", some of the lists on there go to the 1,000th most common word or even further. I would NOT vocabulary words from lists used to study vocabulary in public middle schools or high schools. They use words that are very obscure.
