I guess the first step is deciding on what type of education you will want. You have a couple of options:
You could enter an LVN/LPN program (different states use a different title but it is the same function) As an LVN/LPN, you will be qualifed to perform as a nurse in a clinical setting. The pros: less time in school, I am not sure how much school, usually about 1 1/2 years , cons: you will make several dollars an hour less than an RN, will be less likely to advance into management or supervisory positions (the preference is for RN's)
Your next option is an RN. You can become an RN in essentially 2 ways. You can attend community college for 2 years and attain an associate's degree or you can attend a university for 4 years and attain a bachelor's degree. Either way you will earn the exact same starting pay. The only advantage to getting a university degree is if you have a desire to eventually work in upper management. Pros: will earn more money than a LVN/LPN, better advancement oppourtunities CONS: more time in school.
You are young and you have time and less responsibilty. I would definitely suggest getting your RN license.
Depending on your program of study. You will take certain prerequisite courses such as pathophysiology, medical terminology, etc..After you have completed the prerequisites, you will be allowed to enter the nursing program. The nursing program will consist of coursework and clincal rotations. The clincal rotations will allow you to perform patient care in a variety of settings (psych, pediatrics, surgery, etc..) under the direction of your clincal instructor
After graduating from an RN program, you will need to take an NCLEX exam. Upon passing, you will be qualified to work as an RN. You will not need to re-take the exam once you have passed and your RN license will be good in all the states.
Before you can begin traveling as a nurse, you will have to have experience. You will need to get a job doing pediatrics for about 2 to 3 years in order to gain experience. Once you have experience, you can apply for a position with a traveling agency. No legitimate travel agency will place you in any location right out of nursing school. The agency will typically offer you assignments in a variety of locations. Your assignments will usually be for 3 months. After 3 months, the hospital may renew your contract for another 3 months or if they no longer need you, you will need to find work elsewhere.
Hope that helps,
