I have a question in regards to American vs Canadian Nursing

Published

I have an Associates Degree in Nursing which allowed me to sit for the boards and have my RN license.

I am a registered nurse in the United States.

I understand that in Canada as of 2005 you need to have a Bachelors Degree to be an RN in Ontario.

If I wanted to move to Ontario and continue my RN, what requirements besides taking the CRNE do I

have to do?

Will I be able to continue as an RN? Or because I dont have a Bachelors degree I wouldn't be one?

Can I still be a nurse in Ontario? Does anyone know?

Hi flyingbaby,

I am a new user so I'm not allowed to PM yet, but I received your message.

I have an Associate degree in Nursing from US (it was two year program for RN at the community collage).

I started the process of becoming a RN in Alberta so I can only tell you how it is here. Other provinces might do it differently. The whole process is very long. First you have to send all your documents to CARNA and they have 6 months to respond to you, (it took them exactly 6 months). They most likely will have you go through SEC assessment. To set up appointment for SEC you need to add another month or two. Than you need to wait for results for 6 weeks. If CARNA decides you have met all the competencies required to be a RN in Canada you can take CRNE. CRNE is held only 3 times a year so another wait there.

I know two other nurses from States who went through SEC and they have to do extra education which is called Bridge to Canadian Nurses. Now, based on your performance on SEC, your education and experience CARNA decides how many classes you need to take (if any).

I don't know if there is a possibility of not going through SEC but I assume if your experience as RN is very extensive CARNA might let you take CRNE without it, but I don't know anybody who didn't have to do SEC assessment.

Hope it helps you.

OH, and I don't know if my school is accredited by CCNE for sure but I think it is.
