I graduated this summer 2009 and just passed my board last wk. After being happy and crazy for a few days, I realize that omg, long way to go. It is just a beginning. I really don't know how to hunt for a job. I do google hospitals' name and look at their web site. But it is just so overwhelmed.
My RN friends, can u help me out? how do u guys search for a job? is there any more efficient way?
PS, I can speak Chinese. Any hospital in NYC prefer this?
Thx sooooo much! :heartbeat

Hospitals in flushing have a VERY LARGE oriental community and I am sure you would be a good asset. But i dont think that that they are hiring, but always call and try anyway.

New York Downtown Hospital is in Chinatown. The majority of patients and nurses speak Chinese.

If i were you I will start sending resume to all over NY. I mean upstate included. I am speaking from experience. Unless you know someone that works in the hospitals in the city that can get you in, it will be tough to get a job if you are a new grad. I would google hospitals in ny and start sending out resumes.. you should be able to find a whole list of the hospitals. Keep sending resumes.. it will be a little while until you hear from them. Dont panic.. most hospitals takes forever to get back to you so its normal to not hear from them for weeks to months. There is no easy way to do this. Most places only want resume via website. Mt Sinai doesnt even take resumes in person. You can try going to the HR for NYP they take resume and you can apply right on the spot for openings. Good Luck with your job search. I hope this helps..
Thank you soooo much for your advise. It does help here. I applied more than 10 hospitals already about 2 months ago before I passed my board. So, right now, when I passed my board, some position I applied on line wouldn't allow me to update my info.
I had zero experience with interview and a full time job. So, I don't know what I can do except keep sending out resume and cover letter. :typing
I am dissapointed from hearing nothing these two months when I was preparing my board. I don't know if it would be easier since I have my license now.
I really really appreciate your info here! :redbeathe
You got to apply to more hospitals. Back when I grad last summer finding a job was almost impossible. I applied to so many hospitals that I lost count. Getting your RN license should help with the job hunt. I heard that the job mkt for new grad is opening up more in the city. Interfaith has opening and takes a few new grad here and there, but orientation is short. Sloan-Kettering takes ONLY employee referral, and their orientation is very good. (friends told me) I dont work in the city but working in upstate is pretty good. The orientation is awesome. Everyone is helpful. All of the patients are very pleasant and nice. They dont mind having a new nurse around to take care of them. Well, I dont know what else to tell you besides to keep applying and have someone to work on your resume and cover letter. It will be a while until they get back to you (or not. some places dont even send a rejection letter) I dont wanna tell you to try nursing home or LTC most of the places required 1 yr exp, and if you do get hired, there is pretty much no orientation and you are on your own. I personally dont think is a good place to start your 1st job. However, if you need to pay the loan and get no choice, take the job. Otherwise, I would keep applying. Once again good luck on your job hunt.
Thank you very much for your detail reply with helpful info here! :redbeathe I calm down today and apply online or e-mail them my resume one by one. I feel that NYC may not like to take new graduates coz most of them ask for experience. But others cities of NY state seem look like better.
My classmate suggested me that I should physically show up in HR to hand in my resume. But I am wondering if it is a good way to do it coz it is time consuming!
Thank you again for sharing your experience with me. I felt so lonely in this job hunting and overwhelmed to contact strangers.
You can try applying it in person but I found that to make no difference than to apply online or via email. It is VERY time consuming even if you have a friend who drives and drops you off to every hospital. Hey you never know it didnt work for me it might work for you. If you get tired of filling out applications, shot the HR an email with cover letter and resume. Eventually, someone will see your resume and fwd to a manager.
