Hi fellow nurses,

I need your opionion... I am trying to decide if I would move my GRE test day. I am scheduled to take it in 2 weeks....

I have been taking the practice tests from Kaplan and ETS CD and been making around 380's in verbal and 480's in math section, I've been studying for the last 2 months and feel discouraged about my scores in practice tests. I've been focusing on the verbal part. I know most people here say that their scores are actually 200 points more than their practice scores, since the actual test is CAT, so scoring is different.

I have the Kaplan book, ETS practice question book and CD, Kaplan flashcards of words, Princeton Smart GRE word book, and a REA vocabulary book...Any other suggestions of good books or resources?

I need to score at least 1100 on GRE but I am really challenged....This is even harder than preparing for NCLEX and CCRN !!!

I would appreciate any enlightening thoughts especially from the ones who have taken the GRE :)

REA is excellent. I also used Baron's. Found both to be outstanding study materials - both on target. I didn't use Kaplan at all, no test prep sessions etc. Got a 1470.

I don't see how you can study for the GRE. It is not a matter of memorizing a few things, it tests in-depth knowledge. You either have it or you don't. I did not think it was that bad. I did not study. It had some areas that were tough, but some were easy. You can always retake it. I would go for it.

Did you take the free online practice test on the GRE website?

I think a guide of some sort makes sense. A few years ago The Princeton Review Crash Course for the GRE 2d edition gave me what I needed in Verbal, Math and Analytical Writing. Even more, it gave me the confidence tha I was as well prepared as I could be.

That tiny $10 paperback did help me make my nursing dream come true.

I have to disagree with you cxq....the GRE has questions requiring vocabulary that I didn't have until I worked through the study material. I have a minor in math but its been a long time since I had taken a math class and the GRE asks math questions in a different way than I was familiar with. I know that using the study guides probably added several hundred points. I don't want to sound arrogant but its hard to argue with success and a score over 1400 will get the attention of the people you want it to!

Thanks for y'alls replies...CGX- I need to study the vocabulary constantly, esp for the ones that I don't use everyday, which 80% of them are. That's why they test us about them. But good for you, you didn't have to study for it...I wish I can be the same...

Theoldguy and Reddy-how long did you study for GRE?

I spent about 4-5 hours per day for 2 weeks. I did all the exercises etc.

Less time a day than TOG but closer to 4 weeks. And yes, every bit of that little book was mine by the time I was done. One thing that proved enormously helpful in practice and on GRE day was to start writing 1 2 3 4 in columns over and over before the test began so that I could draw a line through the number(s) of obviously wrong answers. That way, I didn't waste any time on rethinking possibilities or second guessing myself.
