I need help with nursing's job opportunity

Published

Hello,

I am currently a student at Bunker Hill Community College. I have just been in the US for 6 months so I do not know how things work in this country.

A friend of mine who has lived here 10 years said that nursing opportunity for ASIAN WOMEN is very LOW. Because we are too small to carry a heavy patients and move them to another place. So, hospitals are now looking for nurses who are strong enough to do this duty. How do you think about this opinion? Is it true?

Thank you very much!

I dont think so.. Dont let the rumor discourage you!! I have seen many nurses who are small ( 5'- 5'2 ) so it depends on your hard work in school not because of the body stereo types.

Height and size and race don't have as much to do with it as the ability to so the job! About a third of my coworker are small stature and/or Asian!

This ^^

Plus, not every job in nursing requires moving heavy patients.

Specializes in Forensic Psych.

My hospital demographic says otherwise :)

Specializes in ER trauma, ICU - trauma, neuro surgical.

Not true. No school or hospital is going to deny a student or nurse positions based on their race. Your competence will be the judge.

Thank you very much everyone! I really appreciate all your comments. I feel much confident to keep on fighting for nursing.

I have another question that bothers me:

Do we really need VOLUNTEER experience to be accepted easily? As I am having a hard time for study. I cannot do both at this time.

Thank you!

I am not too sure for this one. I would assume it depends on the school that you apply to. It probably looks good on an application, but I doubt it's one of the sole deciders to acceptance (unless it is specifically named in the application process). Your grades are going to be the biggest factor to get into school. You can contact the volunteer office at a hospital and find out the requirements. Some people volunteer when they have time, while others have a set number of hrs each week. Also, find out what your school likes to see. If they say volunteer work makes a difference, then look into volunteering whenever you can. Do what you gotta do.
