Hello, I don't know if anyone can help me but I am having trouble with my paper
We are suppose to identify an experience/ issue that we saw in our clinical practice (I am at a senior independent living facility), do some literature review , identify some issues that arise that are related to that topic and then narrow it down to a research question.
The main thing I came across was the high incidence of depression and isolation in the facility. One may assume that being in a home where you can be involved and see more people that it could help with depression and isolation, but this is not always the case.
I was shocked at the amount of people who were depressed especially in those who appear to seem happy. And even in a home with 166 residents, only about 20-30 residents participate in activities provided by the lodge.
I was also amazed to see how there was even "bullying" occurring among the residents. Every time I spoke to a resident, almost everyone would mention another resident being rude to them.
Given this, I don't know how to narrow this down into a good research question?
I have found articles on the prevalence of depression in nursing homes. another one about how caregivers may be unable to recognize depression sometimes. And possible interventions to help decrease depression or isolation (ex. walking program)
How can depression and isolation affect the well being of a senior residing in a residential facility?
I don't know. I am kind of lost. I have always had issues with developing research questions.
any help would be appreciated
thank you!

Just my thoughts on your verrrry broad topic. It is an interesting subject.
Some causes of depression & isolation? I can think of loneliness and loss as potential causes.
Pet therapy gives a sense of purpose, close relationship. It's nice to feel needed again.
Failure to thrive & physical decline contributing to AND resulting from depression.

Something to think about - just take note of the female to male population ratio. Very female lopsided? I'd bet there's a lot of dis-harmony among so many females. And a lot of needy females can be very catty.
Also, even though it is independent living, I'd bet there's varying levels of independence (versus more dependent levels) that contribute to increased depression.
And finally, does anyone still drive? See if that makes a difference.
Just some ideas....
