I need some advice

Published

Today I got an e-mail from my clinical instructor saying she would like to talk to me about my clinical performance. I'm really worried because I feel like she is calling me in tell me some really bad news. Well this is what happened:

During one of our clinical days she assigned me to a patient that had to go down for a procedure. I did my assessment charted everything did my nurses round and charted that too. But I was unable to give him his 7.00 meds b/c he was NPO. He was gone for the rest of my shift so I missed his 10.00 meds. But I documented as not given. When he got back it was 30 min before we went into post conference and I was doing his vitals, giving him his 10.00 and 7.00 meds and doing one touch among other things. With all of this we ended up going overtime to meet up for post conference. My fellow classmates were ready to leave and felt like I wasn't doing my job and so did the instructor. Did I do something wrong? How could I better handle this situation next time?

thank you

I would think that your instructor should have made it clear that at some point, you need to turn over care to the assigned nurse so that you can go to post conference on time. It is not a work situation where you have to complete your care during an entire shift. It is understood by the preceptors that you are only there for a limited time. I would bring this up to your instructor and insure that you are aware of 'quitting' time in the future.
