I am 21 and a CNA in a nursing home. I am in school to become a nurse and will be finished in another year and a half. The problem is I work 12 hour shifts on Saturday and Sunday.
I hate hate hate it. I get depressed everytime i think about going in there for 12 hours! The supervisors, co workers, and residents are horrible!!! Let me elaborate.
The supervisors are sooo mean and rude. I feel like i am bothering them when i have to tell them about resident. They huff and puff and roll their eyes! i have even had residents tell me not to say anything becuase they see how the supervisors act. Since i'm so nice, i guess, whenever there has to be somone moved to another hall or extra work, i;m the one.
I work with middle aged women and i have never seen more immature people in my life! they never want to help you do anything, they constantly talk about me and use such foul language it's not even funny! I ahve one friend and we work together when we can because my set is so hard and constantly all i hear is complaints from everybody else!!
I have sooo many residents that at a drop of a hat they will turn you into the state for nothing! One man asked for coffee at like 3:00 in the afternoon. I go straight to the kitchen, and they huff and puff and finally give it to me and i go straight back to the room of the man and he tells the nurse he is turning me in to the state. It was not my fault the kitchen was so rude and took sooo long! Now i'm not allowed in his room anymore!
This is just a little list of what i have to put up with. The part that hurts the most is that i work sooooo hard to where i don't even take a lunch break and i constantly get put down and verbally and emotionally abused! I am in the process of looking for another job but tomorrow i don't want to get out of bed to go in ther for 12 hours. I'm like almost crying right now!
does anyone have any ideas or tricks to get through the day sane and without bawling when i walk out or even something to make me want to get up and go
ps i have already turned in my problems and no one will follow through. It's the whole establishment. I am just so ready to get out! How do i survive the weekend:sniff:

Have you talked with your nursing school staff about
CNA positions available? I worked as a CNA in a hospital
while in school.
I am sorry for the experience at the nursing home-
how sad for the residents. The environment is not
healthy, so contact hospitals and other nursing homes.
Look for work outside nursing as well just to get through school.
You need to focus on your studies, and have a healthy
work environment that acknowledges your hard work.
Good Luck and keep us posted.

Find another job. The CNA experience looks nice on your resumee, but it's not vital to getting an nursing job once you have your degree. Good luck!
