I graduate with my ADN in Dec. Upon starting nursing school, I just assumed I would be a bedside nurse and be happy, but the more and more Med-Surg I do, the more and more I think I will not be happy being a floor nurse. L&D has my heart, but our hospital doesn't hire new grads. I just do not know what to do. I am planning to continue taking classes towards my BSN but, it will take a while.
What do you do when you have no clue what you want to do?

With the nursing shortage you should have no trouble find a place to work in your choosen specialty be it ER, ICU or even L&D just keep looking. :)

...like you do know what you want to do: L & D! That particular hospital may not hire grad nurses for L & D, but there are lots and lots of hospitals that DO. Finding them will be homework for you! Rjflyn is correct: with the nursing shortage, I doubt it would be very difficult to find a spot where you heart is. Some areas may be more short-handed at hospitals than others - particularly Med/Surg - but again, check around with different hospitals. I'm not sure which section of NC you're in, but there's likely to be another hospital within close proximity.
Do not let this minor roadblock slow you down! And don't feel like you must alter your dreams because all the doors seem closed (they aren't, by any means) - if you want L & D, then go for it, however you can. You'll be a much happier nurse doing what you love, even if it means going someplace new or a longer commute.
Good luck! I wish you the best...
Thank you both! :)

I agree - if L&D is where your heart is, find a hospital that DOES hire new grads. The first year out of school is the hardest, and if you're not passionate about the area you're working in then it's a whole lot easier to get burned out. Go for what interests you and good luck!!!
