I'm very grateful for getting offered a position at the top 3 hospitals in Oahu IMO. My question is which overall would you pick? I live on the Leeward side so commute is important for me.
Starting pay at straub 41$
Starting pay at queens 44$
I don't know the starting for Kaiser yet I'll get back to this post later.
I'm trying to weight the pro's and cons of each hospital to make a overall better decision. Help me out please.
Straub- HPH, PROS: very professional, hard interview and pretest really screens their nurses, nurses are treated awesome, 4:1 patient ratio, most cna's are nurses, single patient rooms, top 5% patient satisfaction, lots of CNA help.
CONS: Location 60min commute with traffic to my location, parking 6$ blaisdel.
Queens- PROS: Magnet hospital, most resources for nurses in Hawaii, specializes in everything, competitive pay, most opportunities, each nurse has a phone, teaching hospital
Cons: Same as straub, too much people not very friendly, nurse to take own vitals on some units.
Kaiser- Highest pay (I heard), double time and a half on holidays, close to Leeward side 15-20min commute, new facility, best benefits (free medical or cheapest medical), gym benefits haha,
Cons: Poor cna ratios to patients, Nurse does most primary care, kaiser insurance is limited.
Please let me know your thoughts if you work at any of these facilities. Thanks :)
KAISER
Pretty awesome place to work, but when it comes to healthcare you are pretty limited to just 1 ER that you are able to go to should an emergency happen. As far as I am concerned they are pretty well structured and the employees seem very happy there. Nothing really bad to say about this hospital or it's clinics.
STRAUB
Pretty awesome hospital as well. Takes the over flow from Queen's ER. They have clinics everywhere. Very hard hospital to get a position at regardless. They would rather cater to hiring people from the mainland then local people. Parking is pretty limited if NBC is closed.
QUEENS
Great hospital, great co-workers, not so great parking situation, safe campus, #1 trauma center in the pacific basin, and basically they to would rather hire people from the mainland then locals. Census is pretty crazy, but they know how to manage it and just make sure you are willing to dedicate your life to WORK and not family. There is no balance of work and life out side of work when you work for a big hospital such as Queen's.

I work at KP Moanalua Hospital and I have to say that I love it here. I have also Completed clinical hours at QMC Punchbowl and personally I don't like it too much at Queens. As for all the Pros and Cons you all mentioned above I totally agree. With every hospital or job it will come with PROS and CONS. You just decide which one outweighs the cons. To add on to Kaiser- PROS: Friendly Staff, its smaller than most hospitals and to me thats a plus because it allows stronger relationships within the Interdisciplinary teams, most times you'll come across the same patients (Because you see all Kaiser insurance), you don't need to be so critial in terms of equipment/material unlike the Omnicell at QMC (logging in/out to get any supply) which can be time consuming..you can just grab and go (but of course being deligent in what you bring to the patients room), Hospital aides are for the most part extremely helpful and also charts hourly rounding, great parking near the golf course as mentioned (the walk is a nice debrief 7 minutes if you powerwalk), clutter-free environment with Private rooms (on the new sides 5ewa/Malama-West..Clinial area/Tower). CONS- not all units are nicely renovated 1/2/3/4th floor on hopital side are all older and cluttery, short staff (aides and clerks but that was mentioned already), and the lost of hours. I dont see anything else to complain about at the time. If your worried about getting your hours in I would get another job near home for you. I am not working as an RN yet but I am a newly licensed RN just passed the boards. Best of luck with your decision. I am sure you will find the right hospital that fits your needs. If you get a chance I was wondering if I could ask a question. I have the opportunity as a new grad to apply for the NICU at Kapiolani Medical Center WC or I could apply at Kaiser Moanalua. I am finding it difficult to select my options as well. I love Kaiser so much and the drive for me is about 9 minute with free parking. But I have an opportunity to apply at KAP in a specialty with 6 months of training in an academy whereas Kaiser ill be thrown in there with roughly 6 weeks training. No nursing experience beside nursing school, clinicals and previous Aide jobs.....
