I decided I want to pursue nursing. What is the next step?

Published

I'm a rising sophomore Biology major (previously on the pre-med track) and have recently discovered that I want to pursue a career in nursing. The problem is that I attend a small private school that doesn't offer a nursing program or some of the nursing prerequisites (e.g., A&P). Would it be smarter to transfer to a public state school or finish up my prereqs at a CC? If anyone has any advice, I'd really appreciate it.

First, I would see if completed or are close to completing any certificates and degrees. Apply or complete them. This will help with finical aid, transfers, or employment.

Then I would look to see if a nearby college (or a college in the city or state you want to attend) has a nursing program and finish the pre requirements there as it may give you a boost in getting into their program. If that is not possible then get the pre recs at the CC.

This is my advice. More details like which prerequisites are not offered at your college will get you better responses.

I would try to meet with your academic advisor. I think you have two main options: you can stay at your current school and attend a community college simultaneously to complete all your nursing prerequisites, then transfer and graduate; or you can transfer directly to a school that offers both your prerequisites and a nursing program spot. The most important thing when transferring is to ensure that the new school will accept all of your credits, which is why meeting with your advisor is so helpful. I hope this helps!
