I am considering a career in Nursing..... Input requested

[USAF Cop]

I am a Military Police officer with less than a year left in my enlistment. Through research and discussions with a nurse friend of mine, I think Nursing is a good career for me. I will have the Montgomery GI Bill money to pay for my college, though I have 2 1/2 years of college under my belt sofar. I was majoring in Criminal Justice.

I want to be a Nurse Anesthetist. It seems like a well paying, rewarding specialty.

What advise do you (Everyone) have for me when choosing a school to attend. I am stationed in Alabama, though a Georgia resident still. Where are the good schools? I would love to stay in the southeast.

I am in my last semester in a 2 year RN program and I will graduate in May. Although I do not have much input on what school you should choose. I will say personally that nursing school has done so much for me. Some people say how horrible it is and I'm not saying it is easy but, the rewards outweigh the hard work. It has boosted my self-esteem and I have learned so much about so many people it is amazing.... I promise I am not trying to be cheesy, this is really how I feel.... Hope this helps your decision....

One thing I have discovered in these long years of decorated service in the USAF is that I need a challenge. Law Enforcement and playing infantry when I have deployed over to the Gulf or the 'Stans (3 times already) is interesting and challenging AT TIMES. What I love about Law Enforcement is helping people. We handle quite a bit of Domestic Violence in the military and I LOVE helping people.

BUT... There are way too many people in this job that are hear because it is easy to get in to. My ASVAB (Military entrance test) score was very high and I was opened for just about every job except pilot. (Glasses) But I wanted to be a police officer.

Now I have found I want a career that one must WORK to achieve. Where those you work with are there because they WANT to be there, not because they got kicked out of their previous job and got stuck with the Cop career.

I wanted to be a Nurse all my life, and I became one many years ago. However, the nursing field has changed so much in the 3 decades I have under my belt, I would hesitate to encourage anybody to become a nurse. Read some of the threads in this forum and get a lot of opinions. You have a lot of nice nurses here to give their gripes and griefs as well as the problems they encounter on a day to day basis. If after reading these, you still want to enter this field, Go For It. Just remember, when you are a CRNA, you answer to not only the Surgeon but the anesthesiologist. As a surgical nurse of 13 years, I can tell you it is not easy to try to placate these two. Getting through school will be hard too. Of course, you are not dealing with nursing administration, families, co-workers and your patient will be asleep. You are basically on a one to one situation. (except for those rascally surgeons and anesthesiologists.) Good Luck whatever you decide.
