May 30, 2013 First of all, you may want to spend some time with your Counselor to get a better idea of exactly what is included in a nursing education - for a BSN, you will be looking at about 5 years of college. If you don't have a good math and science background, you may end up having to take quite a few non-credit (prep) courses when you begin your college education. If that is the case, the best option is a Community College because it will be much less expensive. Go ahead and investigate several nursing programs in which you are interested. Take a look at their requirements, cost, and eligibility requirements. Most BSN programs are actually a 2-step process. The first two years are spent in your general education (pre-requisite) classes. Afterward, you have to apply to the nursing program. Admission to most programs is extremely competitive. Even though their catalog may say that you only need a 3.0 GPA, the actual requirement is likely to be > 3.5 because so many people are trying to get into nursing school. You may also want to take a look at other health care careers such as respiratory therapy or radiology tech which require only 2 years of education. The general education requirements for most healthcare programs are very similar, so you would probably be able to transfer them to a nursing program later on if you choose to do so.Good luck!
