(Hunter College) Do I Need to the the pre-nursing exam even if I didn't take A&P?

Published

Greetings, all! First post here. I'm a 2007 St. John's University alumni and I obtained a BS in Biology. I want to apply to the Nursing program at Hunter College for the Spring semester-I missed the fall deadline-and I am a bit confused about what I need to do in regards to the pre-nursing exam. Do I need to take it before I apply? I didn't take anatomy and physiology because St. John's didn't allow Bio students to take it(only Pharmacy and PA students) so I was hoping to apply to Hunter and take the rest of the pre-requisites there; is that possible? One more quick questions for the Bio majors taking Nursing: Would my grade for Biostatistics count for Statistics(required for Hunter's nursing program)? Sorry if this has been covered already but I did search for this specific situation in the board but I didn't find it. Thanks to all in advance for your responses!

just bumping to keep it alive..hope anyone can help

What you will have to do is apply to Hunter college in general, not the nursing program because you have to be accepted to the school, the nursing program is a seperate application. Take Anatomy and Physiology and any other pre-reqs in the spring and then apply to the nursing program for the Fall of 2010. You would also have to take the nursing exam during the spring, you don't have to finish the class in order to be able to take the exam, but the class would probably help. I'm not sure about the stats class.

Thanks so much guiltysin! I guess I will start studying for the test this summer then.

Sorry one more question: can I use my GRE books to help prep for the vocabulary part of the pre-nursing exam?

Hi,

Is your theory the same for Lehman College. I have been accepted into Lehman College into the Graduates Special Education Program. Would I be able to do the same thing.

If you want to go into Hunter's nursing program you need the following nursing pre-reqs:

Intro to Chem

Organic Chem

Human Development Psychology

A&P1

A&P2

Microbiology

I'm not sure if you can use your BioStats as a Hunter Stats class. They are picky.

While you take A&P2 and microbiology, you can register and take the Pre-RN exam. Try to score above 130 if you can and have a reasonable GPA (*note* they combine GPA from previous schools).

The Pre-RN exam runs non-stop for 3 hours, so be ready to work. The test is not hard. Just study. A regular SAT book is good enough for the vocabulary. The math is basic conversion, geometry, arithmetic, etc. The science is mostly A&P and biology. There are some physics and earth science questions.

Getting into the program is competitive but anyone who REALLY wants it, can get it. It is a matter of how bad do you want it.

Good Luck!

Hunter-Bellevue has always been a tough school to get into, and the increase in applications has not made things any easier. Just finishing the pre-nursing with a 3.0 may not get one over, as one has heard from current students that there are not a small number of students who have completed lower course work with GPAs ranging from 3.0 to 3.5 and in some cases above who were not granted entry into the nursing program upon application. It all comes down to the size of the application pool and what one is up against in terms of other grades.HB requires Introductory Statistics (STAT 113), which may be seen as a lower course than the one you took, however only the college can make that decision. You may wish to make an appointment or contact the Registrar's office on this matter. Many of the other majors in Hunter College's Schools of the Health Professions, take the same classes as pre-nursing students, which can make getting into some difficult. Best of luck!
