How's Greenville, NC?

U.S.A. North Carolina

I'm looking for information about the Greenville area. What are the best areas for a family with 3 school aged kids looking for some land and good schools? What about the hospitals. I notice some large hospital systems, but none offer any details regarding pay rates. I'm currently a BSN med surge nurse with 3 years experience. What do ya think? Any advice would be appreciated.

I lived in Greenville for three years when I was getting my MPH. For an individual in their early to mid 20s, Greenville is great. For someone who is older trying to raise children, I wouldn't recommend it. Greenville is a college town and ECU is a huge party school. In addition, there really isn't that much out there to do. I know a lot of people with families found themselves commuting to Raleigh in order to do fun activities. Lastly, the crime in the town is absurd. There are some areas that are better than others, but when I was there, I would receive an email a week about a student getting jumped or robbed.

Thanks for your reply. Good to hear honest opinions before moving. So, what areas would you recommend?

It really depends on what you are looking for. If the city is what you want, then the Raleigh area is very nice and still growing. From what I have been told, there are a ton of job opportunities in that area. If not, chapel hill and durham are only a 30 min drive away. If you want to live next to the beach, then I would suggest Wilmington. I think finding a hospital job is difficult out there but there are a ton of other nursing jobs such as home health and doctors offices. If you want to live next to the mountains and a somewhat rural area, then Asheville is a good bet. In my opinion, it is probably the most beautiful area in NC. Kind of reminds me of a smaller version of Boulder, CO.

Not sure if you have moved here already, but will answer anyway :) We moved here from NY 3.5 years ago. I'm glad we left NY, but I would not recommend Greenville to anyone. I have 2 in school and a toddler. We love the elementary school that we're in, but it is far away from everything. We've loved the preschool that both of the older ones were in. But, outside of that, there is NOTHING to do with kids. Nothing. We have to go to Raleigh (almost a 2 hour drive from where we are) for any activities. The health system here- Vidant- is terrible. They have major issues with micromanagement and unskilled leadership. So, there is a huge amount of turnover. Many units have been closed down because they cannot staff them. Most of the nurses are new, from ECU, and use the opportunity to gain experience there and then move on. With 4 years experience, they were paying $48k/yr. Benefits are extremely expensive and coverage is very limited. I honestly worried about my license working there, and I have never felt that way before. There are many awesome places in NC. I would look into other places. Raleigh and Charlotte (if you like cities), Asheville, Wilmington, etc. Good luck with your decision!

Thanks, what hospitals in those areas would you recommend?
