How true that Phil.green passports will not be honored in 2010?

I recently read posts about green passports in the Philippines, saying it will not be valid by the year 2010. I still have green type passport with expiry date on 2012. I don't know yet if its needed to be renewed. Some say don't; but some say yes because by year 2010 passports should be machine readable, the color brown. Help me find the right information because I will be applying for a student visa for two years in Australia and I plan to leave in January 2010.
