How rare is it for other nursing schools to take transfers?

Published

I am a military wife, and my husband will be moving bases after only my first year of nursing school (two semesters) we are not sure of where he will be yet, but how unheard of is it that other schools will take students from other schools?

We may be moving from texas to oklahoma. we are still unsure. thanks for all your help!

I live in Georgia, and although I haven't researched this topic, I do know of one school (Georgia State) that actually has a transfer program for students who have completed part of a nursing program. The info is available on their website. I would suggest checking the websites of schools in the state to which you will be moving and seeing if they offer any information there. You may lose out on some of your credits, but at least you may not have to totally start over. Good luck!

Most schools will transfer some credits from your previous nursing program. It's unlikely that you will find a program that lets you pick up exactly where you left off without having to retake or add any classes. Especially when going out of state, requirements for nursing programs will vary quite a bit and each school will have certain mandatory curriculum. Almost all will require that your final X number of meaning credits be taken at their school. Basic nursing courses are more likely to transfer than those with associated clinicals. Once you know the area you're moving to, the best bet is to call the schools individually and ask about their policy. No sense stressing over it until you can do something about it, though. A year is a long time to be concerned.
