How to pad your resume?

Published

I just started a new graduate residency position on a med surg floor. I am trying to best position myself for a job in a more acute setting 12-18 months from now. Aside from making connections here and developing a reputation as a hard, dependable worker what else can I do? My work will pay for ACLS certification after 6 months, and I plan on doing that. Also, is there any value in volunteering and joining nursing associations (ANA, Georgia nursing association?) Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

OK - the title of your post is misleading. "Pad" implies that you are trying to artificially inflate your resume but what you're actually trying to do is "enhance" your resume... by obtaining additional skills/knowledge that will put you in a better position to obtain the jobs you really want. Whew! Totally different things - LOL

You're on the right track. Take advantage of all the Continuing Education and training offered by your employer. Become an active member of your professional association(s). Volunteer for 'extra' activities such as task forces or committees; not only is this a clear and very positive indication of your commitment to your job, but provides you with visibility so that influential people in your organization know who you are.

These days, healthcare organizations are very keen on employee "engagement" Employee engagement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and they will sit up and take notice if you have a resume that shows that you fit this description.
