HOw was/is nursing school for you? HOw about being a nurse?

Published

Hello all. I'm pondering about going into nursing. I need to take my pre-reqs but to tell the truth, i'm not really into ANYTHING right now. I have nothing that i'm so sure about that i want to commit to going to school for it. I'll be graduating with my bachlors in another field and i really don't know what to do next. I figure why not do nursing till i figure out what i want because at least i'll have a secure job and a decent salary while i figure things out. Plus, i always wanted to be in a field of helping people but i just am not sure what kind of help i want to give. i thought of psyc but i don't want to invest my time and money for a pHD for something i'm not passionate about. So here is my question...HOw was nursing school for you? I know everything in life is hard but can someone like me that isn't 100% sure about nursing make it as a nurse and in nursing school? Please be specific about your experience in nursing school and about being a nurse, especially if you were like me, not 100% sure. Thanks so much

Do not use nursing school as a backup while you "figure out what you want to do." It requires far too much time, effort, determination and stress. Research the field; nature of the job, working conditions, pay, etc before going through bootcamp - oops i mean nursing school! I love what I am doing, but it is a LOT of work. Please think this through carefully, for your sake and for our future patients.

NS requires time, dedication and devotion. It is not, I repeat, NOT something you do to fill the time. Our patients deserve those who are dedicated to them, their safety and their care. I absolutely love what I am doing, but I have spent practically every minute of every day for the last 2 1/2 years preparing to graduate and take the NCLEX.

I would suggest that you speak to a counselor at your school to get some perspective on where you might really want to go from here.

i'm not sure the types of nursing schools today would benefit someone like you who isn't 100% commited to the art of nursing. yes the grads these days can pass the tests, yes they can talk big but frankly they can't nurse worth a damn and can't chart worth a reading. only the dedicated individuals who actually want to learn the art and skills it takes to be an effective nurse learn it after graduation.......sad but true :smokin:

probably not a good choice from what you posted.

Too, around here it's not that easy to even get into nursing school. I know lots of people who can't get accepted.

I found nursing school to come easy to me. School always has.

However my classmates did not feel the same way, everyone always says its a stressful time. I enjoyed it.

Nursing as a career--- trust me. its nothing you want to do to "tide you over."

Working as a nurse is much harder than school ever was. And its stressful.

But the good thing about it- is its so broad- you can always move onto something else- and you'll never be without a job.
