How much microbiology needed for NY nursing

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hi there,

I recently moved to the states, NYC, and was wondering how much microbiology (hours or credits) is required to fulfill the nursing education required by New York State Licensing Board. Albany doesn't seem willing or able to answer this question. I received my Nursing degree in Finland and there we do approximately 28 hours of microbiology throughout the nursing course. Vermont State Licensing Board rejected my application to take the NCLEX and State Board Exam based on the fact that I didn't have enough hours of Microbiology. They said they require 40 hours. Is it the same for New York? Do I have to take further microbiology classes/credits here in New York? Is that even possible? Does anyone out there have similar experience????

Any advice is most appreciated,

Thim

Most colleges/programs ask you to have at least 3 credits of microbiology including a lab portion of the course, which would be about 45-48 hours of lecture (not including the labs, which only count as 1/2 credit an hour), so 28 hours isn't enough.

You can take a micro class at a community college, though the fee might be hefty for international students. Many states require that you live in state for a year to be considered a resident though I've known some people that have gained residency status for tuition purposes by talking with their school about it. You could potentially take a cheaper course online but you'd have to really make sure it will be accepted by the nursing board before you go that route. I was able to take physiology online with a lab and it counted so it can be done.
