How much can I afford as an RN living in San Diego county?

U.S.A. California

Hi, I am a new graduate nurse from Kansas. Me and my husband are interested in moving to Escondido, CA (which I believe is 30 minutes outside of San Diego) in a couple of years and was wondering if there were any nurses in that area that could be able to tell me how much it is that they are making as a nurse and how much they are paying for their house. I guess I am curious to know how much of a house I would be able to afford based on RN's wages out there??? My husband, he is going to HVAC school right now to get his certificate because he knows that in order to live out in Escondido, we both would have to have good jobs. Then again, I've been doing some research and I've been reading that the cost of homes are so ridiculously expensive that RN's aren't able to really afford it either. Is this true?

I would love any feedback or comments. Getting some kind of insight from those of you who are actually living and working in the area would greatly help! Thanks!!

I know of a couple married RNs who are in the process of buying homes now in San Diego County. Housing costs are more deflated now than they have been in several years.

You can compare the cost of living between the two locations using this calculator:

Good luck!

Sounds like you're talking about La Jolla, and yes that's a very pricey area in San Diego. Escondido is a much cheaper place to live since it's in North County. The further away from San Diego you move the cheaper it is, and that's usually south and east. North County is closer to Orange County and that area is also very pricey too depending on the area. I'm not exactly sure what the pay is in San Diego but from what I've heard it's pretty low considered it's an expensive area to live in. I wish I could tell you the pay exactly but I'm really unsure. Good Luck
