How Much And How Long

Published

I am interested in a few nursing programs in the hampton roads area. The most appealing being Sentara and MCI. How long and how much was it to complete your prereqs for Sentara (18 credits) through say...TCC. The next RN starts up in Jan 09 at Sentara and the MCI program allows you to do prereqs there and be done by this Sept. just in time for the next program but, It's also very costly from what I gather. Any help would be great :D

Hi there!

I am a nurse in HR, and I graduated last year (2007). I actually went through the TCC School of Nursing. To do my prereqs and all my other required classes other than nursing it took me 4 semesters. That was before nursing school (which was another 5 semesters). For me the best thing I did was to complete all those courses first so I could concentrate on just the nursing stuff when I finally started the program, since the workload is massive and study time, required activities, and clinicals made it hard to do anything else. Some of my classmates took other classes while in the nursing program, and they had a hard time keeping up.

As to cost, I think TCC charges around $70.00 per credit hour for classes, and if it's a class like Anatomy, or Microbiology there are lab fees, etc. as well. Also the cost of books. I think that depending on the total credits, I paid around $800-$1200 per semester plus books. Student loans helped with some of the cost, if you can get them.

One thing to think about, is that while both MCI and Sentara are really good schools and I work with nurses who have gone both places, they are more expensive than TCC, and require more prereqs than TCC. And, TCC is a good school too.

I hope this helps.

Thanks so much that was extremely helpful :D

deff dont agree on TCC being a good school only becuz my brother an my dad went to TCC an half the time they didnt even have the Main teachers always subs an wht not so of course its hard to learn with a new teacher everyday i did get into MCI not for RN tho for LPN but my cost is 24,000 witch includes any and everything i am going to need while im in school scrubs books shoes everything u pay 100 doller fee an thn each month u pay 75 dollers witch by the end of my 18 months will take off 1350 but grants student loans an wht not can cut that cost in half....... well good luck * an its 18months becuz i chose nite instead of day...

Well, Thanks for the insight on that as well. I ended up choosing TCC as my school. I personally didn't feel comfortable taking out a huge loan at MCI or any of the others really w/out having a clue what my actual pay was going to be as an RN. I would rather not take that risk for myself anyway. As far as it taking me 2.5 years to complete my degree I am okay w/ that I felt I needed the time not to feel rushed and getting my degree in nursing is extremely important to me. I couldn't feel comfortable getting a degree in 15-18 months and be comfortable working out on the floor and being responsible for others lives. I don't think it's enough time FOR ME personally to feel comfortable! Kudos to those that can! It's fine I am sure for people who have the time to cram all that info in-in 18 months I am just not that person : ) Thanks for your info as well!!
