...how long would the need for qualified nurses from overseas last, more specifically if the qualified nurse is an advanced practitioner (ie nurse practitioner)?

I'm looking to hopefully relocate to Australia and make it my new home in a few years, however, I'm not sure if the need will change by then.

If you read further down this thread, you will see advanced nurse practitioners NP's discussed.

In Australia NP's are advanced nurse practitioners, not just through study, but they have actually worked in their specialty as RN's first and have much experience before they study to be advanced nurse practitioners, through a masters.

I have no idea how AHPRA will assess NP's without RN experience first to actually be advanced with experience not just study!! When you are an advanced practitioner it conjures up a nurse with much on hands experience that all other staff and patients can have faith that they have nursing experience, not just an advanced nursing degree! here in Australia.

You would not have the nursing experience to work rural or remote as a sole practitioner NP you may work as an advanced practitioner under supervision in a city or large rural area. But I do not know how AHPRA will assess you as all NP's here are RN's with much experience first then study their masters

Do you think there will remain a need for nurses in the next few years though? If so, in what specialties?

Hard to tell when it will happen, the amount of overseas nurses applying to work here. Specialties as ED and ICU, dialysis are needed at this time and OR. It will become difficult, in Victoria already. It will happen, oversupply as apparently happened in the US, Canada, UK. While nursing is on the 'shortage list'' the immigration of nurses will continue.
