I think if you have a good relationship with this person it would be okay to contact them now. Just explain that you know they are super busy with their own lives and work, however, you wanted to first make sure they received the recommendation link, and #2 that you would like to have your app completed in time for acceptance for fall =)

I'm putting this out there because I tend to be a little on the impatient side and need perspective.
My school sent out notices to my recommenders one week ago. Two of the three sent letters within a couple of days and I'm just waiting on one more. I can resend the email anytime but I don't want to annoy her because it's a good recommendation (from NIH) and will hopefully be really helpful. I'm still waiting on a couple of transcripts so it isn't the last thing yet. I'm applying for the fall semester at University of Cincinnati so I'm trying to finish up my app quickly before it fills up. At what point would you resend or send an email attempting to casually and non-impatiently ask when to expect the letter?
