How do I start?

hello,

so glad to have found this forum!

my questions is this: how do i start/get into a medical /computer related job?

i am a rn with 28 years experience in operating room nursing and also some triage. i am a diploma graduate. i completed my associates in computer science last year ( just for the fun of it) i really enjoy working with computers and teaching others to use them ( co-workers etc)

with healthcare moving towards computerized charting, medical records etc..there must be a spot for me somewhere! i understnd nurse informatics positions all seem to require a masters degree, but with my many years of experience, do you think i am a good candidate for informatics??

any insight into this will be greatly appreciated!

I didn't realize most positions required a masters degree.

snowshooz,

i apologize for missing your original post. there is no hard and fast rule that "all" informatics nurse positions require a masters degree. i've been practicing in the field since 1996 and i do not hold a masters degree. have you thought about joining your local nursing informatics organization or doing additional research on exactly what this specialty is and requires? let me know if you need additional information.

I would do what I did when I was in that position about 1 year ago....

Start finding hospitals that have gone 'paperless' and enquire in their department what positions they have open. Also, start looking for companies that make that software available to hospitals/doctor's offices etc, and start applying with them. At first you have to market yourself, but then when you have experience, they come looking for you. :)

Snowshooz,

Another area that you should focus on within informatics are career options in electronic medical records. It sounds like you would be a perfect candidate for a career in software training and implementation. Those indivividuals typically go onsite to hospitals and private medical practices who have purchased the software and train the clinical staff. Your clinical background, along with the understanding of hospital/medical office workflow, are great assets. Good luck!
