How do I prepare for the NPD exam?

This is a question near and dear to my heart as I'm a certified Nursing Professional Development (NPD) Specialist. I co-authored the 4th edition of the Nursing Professional Development Review and Resource Manual, which is used to prepare for the certification exam.

NPD is a certification (NPD-BC) accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Credentialing Center (ANCC) for nurse educators in the hospital setting.

I loved being a Nursing Professional Development Specialist because it allowed me to be an educator, remain in acute care, and be close to nursing practice and patients my entire career. It is a very rewarding role.

The certification exam covers a wide range of topics. Once you pass it, you will be an excellent resource in your role.

Certification recognizes expertise in adult learning, preceptor development, project management, the steps of evidence-based practice, how to research, and more. You will be tested on conflict of interest, commercial bias, and your understanding of copyright. For instance, is it OK to use a Google image in your presentations? You will be tested on your understanding of a just culture, boundary issues, and intellectual property. The exam will include how to budget for an educational event, the 5 "P's" of marketing, and what a marketing flyer promising continuing education units must consist of, according to ANCC.

You must understand outcome measures, benchmarking, quality assurance, and the difference between a competency-based, formative, and summative or outcome-based evaluation. What are the rules around providing a quiz after an educational offering? Is it required? There are myths in the Staff Development world, and there is the truth, which you will learn.

You will be tested on Kirkpatrick's four levels of evaluation and on formulating a PICOT question. You must also know the difference between an accredited provider of CEs and an accredited approver of CEs.

Of course, there will be content on cultural sensitivity, technology, fidelity simulation, computer-based learning, remote learning, shared governance, organizational structure, culture, and dynamics.

The list above does not include all topics. There are a lot, and way more than people realize.

Preparing for the NPD (Nursing Professional Development) exam requires a structured and strategic approach. Here are some steps to help you get ready for the exam:

Understand the Exam Format and Content

Familiarize yourself with the exam structure, content outline, and types of questions. The NPD exam typically covers various domains such as educational design, leadership, professional role, and practice.

Review the official NPD certification handbook and exam content outline provided by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Create a Study Plan

Develop a study schedule that allows ample time to cover all the content areas. Break down the material into manageable sections and allocate time for each.

Set specific goals for each study session and stick to your schedule.

Gather Study Materials

Use recommended textbooks, review books and online resources. Some popular study materials include "Nursing Professional Development: Scope and Standards of Practice" and "Core Curriculum for Nursing Professional Development."

Consider purchasing or borrowing study guides and practice exams specifically designed for the NPD exam.

Join Study Groups or Attend Review Courses

Join a study group or find a partner to discuss and review the material. This can help reinforce your understanding and provide different perspectives.

I highly recommend attending a review course. It will include a very helpful practice test. 

Utilize Practice Exams and Questions

Take practice exams to familiarize yourself with the question format and identify areas for further study.

Review the rationales for correct and incorrect answers to deepen your understanding of the material.

Focus on Weak Areas

Identify your weak areas through practice exams and targeted reviews. Spend extra time studying these areas to build confidence and competence.

Stay Updated

Ensure you are aware of any updates or changes to the exam content or format. Check the ANCC website regularly for the latest information.

Take Care of Yourself

Maintain a healthy study-life balance. Ensure you get enough rest, eat well, and exercise regularly.

Practice stress-relief techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, or deep breathing exercises to stay calm and focused.

Day Before the Exam

Review key concepts and notes, but avoid cramming.

Ensure you have all necessary documents and materials, such as identification and exam confirmation, ready for the exam day.

Exam Day

Arrive at the exam center early to avoid any last-minute stress.

Read each question carefully and manage your time effectively during the exam.

Following these steps and staying committed to your study plan will prepare you well for the NPD exam.
