I currently work for Lehigh Valley Hospital, but I am interesting in picking up some per diem work in the area. Do I need to contact an agency, or will hospitals hire you for per diem without an agency?

Hospitals generally don't like using agency, so many hire their own per diem employees at rates comparable with agency wages. The perdiem nurses get the higher wages and the hospital does not pay fees to the agency.
Contact a few nurse recruiters in area hospitals and ask. Unless all areas of the hospital are fully staffed every day and nobody is ever out sick or on vacation, per diem employees are useful.
