How do I compose my resume after having been on disability for 4 years

Published

I am a PACU RN and have been on disability/unemployed since 2012 for back and hip surgery with complications. I can no longer do bedside nursing, unable to stand for extended periods. I would like to find employment in some kind of administrative position, but how do I explain the employment gap? I am afraid that if I mention my physical problems, nobody will want to hire me. I did apply for quite a lot of jobs in case management and customer service, but haven't had any response. I even took a course in medical coding and billing, thinking that there would be great demand for it, but that was a waste of time (and money), because I tried for over a year to find employment with no luck at all.

Any suggestions?

What about if you said you quit because you had a family emergency... and now you would like to work again? You dont even have to goninto detail about the family emergency. Technically it isnt a lie... you had to tend to yourself ..... Many people diacriminate..even though it is illegal it is still real. Protect yourself ...

Thank you Katlove, that is a great idea!

Maybe you can try your local vocational rehab and someone maybe able to assist you with placements.

Specializes in Pediatrics, developmental disabilities.

I agree...I would contact your state vocational rehabilitation office.

Do you have an advanced degree? Could you teach online?

Have you done any volunteer work that you could include in your resume?
