How do I break into pediatric oncology as a new grad?

I am a RN/new grad. My goal is to be in pediatric oncology. Is there any tips on how to break into pediatrics and then pediatric oncology? What steps do I take?

If you've already graduated, it's a little late to do what would give you your best shot. That would be getting a job as a CNA on a peds oncology floor while in school or getting your senior preceptorship on that floor. If you have connections from your peds clinical, reach out to them.

Apply everywhere even if you don't meet their "qualifications"

My greatest recommendation is to do your preceptorship in peds oncology, become a member of APOHN, and get acls and pals certified in your senior year.....this will look extremely good on your resume and show the hiring manager that you really want to be a peds oncology rn. I say this because I just graduated in may and got hired on as a peds oncology nurse because I was well prepared and peds oncology is my passion. Good luck!

I worked as a PCA on peds hem/onc during school and I'm a nurse there now. From what I've seen of our new hires, any peds or oncology experience is a plus. My unit also loves CPNs, which you can't get until you've got a year of peds experience. If you can, get hired in a pediatric hospital on any floor and transfer when your 6 months are up.
