How do I become an LPN?

Published

Hey there, Im currently studying for my RN (adult) qualification in the UK. My partner has asked me to move to the states with him when his visa runs out next year. Since it seems a difficult process to transfer my RN qualification to the USA I was wondering if any of you could give me any information on training to be an LPN?

How long is the training?

How much does it cost?

What is the pay like?

We are looking to move to San Diego so any specific info would be great.

Is there any chance I could get credit for my prior learning?

What is the main difference between lpn and RN- (except pay)

Is it relatively easy to get a job?

How easy is it to convert from LPN to RN and how much does this cost?

Thank you for all your help, all the above is obviously dependent on me getting a green card but there is always hope.

Hope you are all well

UK nursing education is far different form what it is here. It's been since the mid 90s since I worked with anyone from the UK, so it may have had many changes. At that time, she had been practicing as a nurse midwife, the equivelant of an advanced practice RN here. When she moved here, Florida allowed her to set for the LPN boards but would not give her any credit for being the equivelent of an advanced practice RN!

Will you graduate before you move here? Maybe you can check with the Cali BON and ask them what you can do with your education from now until then to qualify for the NCLEX-PN

Unless there have been a major changes in education, I doubt you could do anything to qualify for NCLEX-RN. :crying2:

Just as a side note, I have always thougt the UK has the right idea as far as nursing education goes, why don't you explain what classes you have been taking. Let's see if it's still pretty much the same and a direction that we should be moving in! Maybe if enough US nurses learn how the UK educates their nurses we can get something going here!

The PN exam covers assessment, medication, and ethical issues involving all age groups (birth to death. There are questions on obstetrics, peds, med/surg and psych.

Dont UK nurses specialize in one area from the start? How broad is your education?
