How do I become an emergency nurse?

Published

Hello, i'm relatively new here and just wanted to ask a question about becoming an emergency nurse. I am from Australia, so not sure if the pathways to this career is different than other countries, but it seems like I need to do a 3 year bachelors of nursing to become a RN. From then on I am not particularly sure if I am qualified to work in the emergency department. So would I need years of experience for this position? There is also an opportunity to do a masters of advanced nursing where I can specialise in emergency nursing. Just very not sure about this. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Finish uni, get a grad year which may or may not include a rotation to ED. Once your grad year is up apply for ED roles, depending on your hospital you may be guaranteed a second year of work after your grad year...If there is no ED positions go to the pool positions - these are guaranteed shifts across the hospital, there will be a chance to get into ED that way.

Also enjoy your student placements, do NOT tell the ward nurses that you ONLY want to be an ED nurse - quick way to getting shunned. There are many amazing opportunities in nursing - I was CERTAIN I wanted to do peads - did my placement, HATED it, fell in love with general surgery where I spent 10 years of my career, now off on a different adventure in acute geriatric orthopaedics & Gastroenterology as a NUM.
