How hard does it really get?

I am a senior in high school and i am doing a project on nursing. Does anyone work in the NICU or nursery that has had very emotional experiences? What about some stories? I'd love to hear them. How do you deal with all the stresses that come with nursing? I'm trying to get information on how emotionally demanding it is. Thanks a lot. :)

hi tabatha,

welcome aboard. i have a feeling you'll be receiving a few responses from our nicu nurses here on the bb.

i personally could never work nicu because of such critical and emotionally draining experiences.

but then again, there are those that could never do what i do (hospice) so one tends to stay in the specialty that brings them much satisfaction.

anytime that you have one of those type of days, you do what you need to in order to rejuvenate and recompose.

but the joy of all the successes and triumphs certainly counteract those ones that don't end as expected.

and working in any type of critical care setting, you'll definitely be expending those mental energies as opposed to the emotional ones....using critical thinking/skills at all times, never to take anything for granted.

if you are intent on the nicu, see if you can shadow some of the nurses when the time comes and get a feel of what it will be like.

i wish you well.
