Hi friends:

I am thinking to take my 10 years old daughter to move to bay area to live. With 3 years expeience, not for sure if I can find a good RN position in the area. Any clues? Anyone can recommend some good hospitals?

SF,San Jose, Fremont ....etc. Where has good elementary schools and hopspitals? Thanks! Your suggestions can help a lot! I appreciate it very much.

John

Hi Guys:

How far to drive from Fremont to Redwood City? Any public transportation available? Thanks! John

Here's info about the San Francisco Bay Area:

Here's a map that shows where the different cities are in the San Francisco Bay Area:

You'll probably need to drive over highway 84. You can do a Google maps with two addresses and it will show you the best route and how long it would take by car.

I don't know the VTA bus system well enough, but there are several transit systems.

http://www.vta.org/schedules/schedules_bymap.html

http://511.org/ (has transit, rideshare and traffic info)

plus a list of all the transit providers:

Here's the ACE shuttle service from Fremont, but it goes more into San Jose/Santa Clara:

Here's the Dumbarton Express, a bus that goes from Fremont into Palo Alto and Menlo Park. You would still need to transfer to get to Redwood City:

You could probably carpool with someone:

Or live in Redwood City, which is a very nice city and avoid the bridge commute altogether. Good luck.

The job I am finding in Redwood is 32 hour job,Mon-Thur. After four days of work, you really don't want to find another job to make up the income as I have kids to take care.

Well. I have to look for a 3 days 12 hr job in another place. Hopefully, I will hear some from Good Sams in San Jose.

I may try some other hospitals like John Mur in Concord. I thought about L.A area. L.A may not be good for my daughter. Anyway, my current lease will expire next month. I need find something soon. Thanks guys for helps. John

You can also look into the VA Medical Center in Palo Alto, pay is at the lower end for RN's in the Bay Area, but the benefits (Federal employee) are terrific and the hospital is one of the best in the VA system. From Campbell, you'd be looking at 25-30 minutes commute.

If you are interested in living in Concord area, there is also Kaiser Walnut Creek which is very close.

Have you looked at the California Department of Education to compare API/APR? ... (I am not for one second claiming that a numerical number is a comprehensive reflecion of a school, but if you have limited time, it is a good snap shot) As California schools are strugling, I think it is really worth paying attention to.

Of the schools in the bay area that I am familiar with, I have found the number (API is out of 1000) to be accurate of what I consider to be a "quality" public school. Before deciding on a neighborhood to live in, it may be worth checking out the local schools.

For example, if you search Alameda county, and look at all of the Oakland elementary school APIs lined up, it is quite clear--the numbers range from 550-930. If you look at the location of the school, that number *may* (or may not for some) be a reflection of what you are looking for in a community.

You can find this info at

http://www.cde.ca.gov/

Again, I am not saying that testing scores are a direct refection of a community (not here to stir up controversy everyone), but I have found them to be a lot more accurate than one might expect, based on what I know about our local schools.

Kindly advise what is my chances of getting a job as an RN how soon, how difficult will it be in the bay area. I lived and have a house in Fremont and a new BSN grad with new license I have not applied anywhere yet where do I start? do I have to go to an employment agencies first or apply directly to the hospitals? I've been in the Human resources management level for 9 years from computer companies this is a career change for me I have no work experience as a nurse only the clinical experience that we had during my internship at the school. Thank you

Hi John,

I don't know if you have to come to the Bay area, but the Sacramento area is beautiful and the cost of living is much less expensive. I have a couple of friends from nursing school who have expressed how much work is available in that area. If that is a possibility for you, maybe someone more familiar with that area can help you. I do not have children, so I don't know anything about the schools in that area. However, the pay is the same, and the cost of living is much less.

This should probably be another thread since the original poster already has nursing work experience, but here's my response. Apply directly to the hospital you want (I'd apply to 3 at least) and look for "new grad" training programs. Teaching hospitals or larger hospitals generally intake new grads only 2 or 3 times a year (Feb, July and Oct). People tend to interview early (i.e. May or June for the July class). Given there are a lot of new grad nurses graduating in May or June, it pays to apply early. (Don't be afraid to contact the HR recruiter at the specific hospital and/or apply online.) Employment agencies are usually for experienced nurses (most of those places want nurses with at least 1 year nursing experience on the floor). The new grad programs expect new grads to have already passed their nursing boards OR they expect you will take it with in 30 days of hire. The fact you already passed your boards is a plus in your favor. Good luck.

Check out Craigslist.org

I see a ton of RN positions listed on there. Also, I swear by John Muir. They are a very reputable hospital and maybe Okalnds Children Hospital ... also head good things. and you def. wont have a hard time finding a job as a RN w 3 yr exp.

Good luck ...

Im thinking about getting outta here!! Getting tired of the YAY area!

I got a call from L.A. They told me the pay forRN with 3 yrs experience is 32 bucks/hr. Well, that is too low comparing L.A rent, Ca 9.3% Tax etc. Sacramento or Concord is what I am looking into now after your suggestions. Thanks John

the L.A. area pays significantly less than the Bay area. part of the reason why there are so many people trying to find jobs up here.

I worked for UCLA and I will be getting paid more $12 more per hour in the Bay area than I was down there.

Just FYI ... at $32 an hour or about $60K a year, California tax isn't 9 percent. It's more like 5 percent if you're single, 3 percent if you're married.

Although I have to admit that the $32 an hour pay rate in LA is weird. The average house there costs $550,000. You can move out to the desert, save $250K, pay only $300K for a house and still make $32 an hour out there as an experienced nurse.

Not to long ago someone posted that an LA hospital wasn't giving pay raises either. I wonder if the LA market is saturated with nurses ... kind of like what we seem to be seeing with some of the posts about the Bay Area.

Yeah ... but a house in Santa Clara will cost you $715,000. You've gotta figure that a big chunk of that $12 would probably be eaten up by the mortgage and then some.
