How to get your maternal/peds nursing hours?

Published

I've done the CGFNS/CES and I'm lacking in child/maternal nursing hours.

(I'm British trained, Adult nurse (2007) and I have a postgrad diploma in health visiting which I would have assumed could count towards my maternal/child nursing hours but CES didn't include)

I've applied to North Carolina BON.

Does anyone know how you go about topping up these hours? There's plenty of information about how we lack the hours but not much on where to get them! I've emailed my BON to ask for further info i.e. how many hours and do they know of anywhere they refer foreign grads but I'm awaiting their reply.

What is the best strategy?

Try and get a US student visa and find a college over there to do my training?

Or try and find something here in the UK? Not that we have anything specific here unless I want to specifically retrain into child branch or midwifery branch.

Or do I try and get NC BON to try and recognise my postgraduate diploma?

Any help would be gratefully received!!

There are not any courses that I am aware in the UK that you can make up these hours unless you go for the 18 month courses.

Post grad doesn't always equate as everything must show up on your transcripts from initial nurse training but I do think it is worth contacting the BON and asking them if they will take it into consideration.

Very difficult to find a school in the US that accepts students just for certain things but you can try contacting some to see if they will consider it if the BON not willing to accept Post grad stuff

Hi Freya008, Have you had any luck? What did CGFNS tell you you lacked (i.e. concrete details, number of hours, etc.)? I am a BSN student in NZ with hopes of being an RN in the USA in the future and want to know what I am up against. For me too, I see lots of info on here about lacking subjects but little success stories...

I have been emailing a few schools in the states I am interested in without much luck since I don't have a transcript yet. Please update us as info is very much appreciated :)
