Im a nursing student looking for my first patient care technician position, How did you get your first pct position? I'm even looking at nursing home but they require a gnat license around here? Anyone know the typical nursing home pay for cna/gna especially in the dmv area? Share your experiences.
I've been blessed, got my PCT job on a med surg floor, while doing clinicals....I told the director I appreciated the opportunity to learn so much and I would like to work there. I got an interview the last day of clinicals, which I thought I bombed, got offered the job a week later.....now my director told me to apply for grad nurse and to tutor with our UBE for the Nclex, and I have my first rn job...I have to sign a contract for two yrs, orientation and precepting is 16 weeks.
I was not certified and still, after 8 years as a PCT at 2 different facilities I'm still not certified. It's not a legal requirement in Fl for PCTs to be certified. My first job I knew someone and was hired without experience (I got lucky) my second job I was qualified with experience and references. My most recent application went well too! Experience trumped the certification.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

I got CNA certified during a high school program I was able to take and during the rotations we would rotate throughout the entire hospital through different departments, for example - Radiology, respiratory therapy, patient transport, etc. I was able to obtain a job in a med surg floor shortly after graduation. I worked there for a total of 2.5 months. The patient load was on average of 25 patients and it was too much. I then applied and got hired in an ICU and have been working there ever since for the past 2 years.
