How do you fill your cup?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I was once asked at the end of a long day in a chemotherapy unit "How do you fill your cup at the end of the day?" I would love to hear how all of you revive the soul at the end of a giving shift, and come home to your families and loved ones (including pets) and continue to give some more. For most of us the day is not done at the end of 8 or 12 hours and it is really important to share with each other how to fill the cup back up!

slipping out of my "student nurse suit" as I exit my car, leave the day behind as I close my car door and let my children lead the role as I walk in. My home is my family's stage and when I walk in I allow that feeling to remind me of how I am defined. I am not only a student nurse, but mommy, wife, and "the girl with the leash"...

I find that my home and family (furkids included!) does a very fine job of filling my cup and allowing me to realize the reason I get up and head out the door each day...my family gives me a renewed commitment to what I am doing each day.

Hmmmm.... are you basically asking "how do you recharge?" :) It may sound selfish, but when I come home after work I try to have a little time to myself. Usually that means getting on this computer and playing around a bit.

I also often go to work out after work... that helps too.

I recharge by coming home to my family. No place id rather be, snuggled all nice and cozy in my relax jammies watchin tv or hangin out with my familiy.

Now, I've never had a job as a nurse (just a student) but in all of my other jobs I had a simple rule. Work stays at work and home at home. I always changed to my work clothes when I got there and changed out when I left. Then, I would drive around for twenty or so minutes until all thoughts of the day disappeared. In addition, if I got a call from work while home I always went outside to answer it. Not mixing the two doesn't refill your cup but keeps it from emptying it anymore.

Specializes in everywhere.

I go straight to the shower to "wash the hospital off" of me. Then jump in my warm fuzzy jammies and relax with my darling hubby, jump online to see what is going on, return phone calls from friends and family. Home time is exactly that - home time.

As tired as I am after working a long night shift, I get a burst of energy as soon as I crank my car just at the idea of going home. I love my little apartment and my sweet little yorkie! It is part of why I work so hard......to create a soft warm place to come home and enjoy life and give thanks to God! What is even better is that my hubby is on his way home TODAY! So not only will my cup be filled, it will be overflowing. But then again, it always has been!:p

After clinicals (I am a junior nursing student) I like to get out of my scrubs, usually before I get out of my truck. I run to the door and release the beast (my American Bulldog Chance) and race about the yard with him off the leash and make him so wild. Then I go to the bus stop and meet my daughter, race her home and around the yard and make her so wild. Then we settle down and I cook dinner for the family and pamper my wife a little by doing all the house work. A little TV time, then I read to my daughter and put her to bed. By then I have forgotten all about clinicals and how many messes I have had to clean all day at the nursing home. If I am really having a good day, I make ice cream sodas for the wife and myself before bed as a night cap. Seems to work for me so far, so good.

I keep my cup empty as the empty space inside is more important than the cup!:chuckle
